SuperOffice 3.1
SuperOffice, with its shared database, combines all the basic tasks that every business
professional must perform on a daily basis. SuperOffice places critical and updated information
at each persons fingertips and gives company wide visibility to all customer related information.
When SuperOffice was first launched in 1990, it aimed
to dispel the myth that computers and data are complicated. Its designers wanted you to have
more time to spend building relationships with all your important external contacts
and have immediate access to valuable information about your market, services and products.
Version 3.1 is still incredibly easy to use, but also includes more functions and features than before.
SuperOffice 3.1 is not about word processing or spreadsheets. SuperOffice 3.1 is a "network-ready"
business information management software for both multiple and single users on Windows and Macs.

More Information about SuperOffice 3.1 for new users
1.0 SuperOffice's C-Tree Database needs SHARE loaded
Single users and Travel users of SuperOffice with the C-Tree Database
installed also need to install SHARE or VSHARE to enable SuperOffice to work correctly. Users of Windows 3.11 or later do not need to do this.
SHARE is an extension to both MS-DOS and PC-DOS that enables applications to lock records
in a file which the applications are sharing. This is essential to enable SuperOffice to work correctly.
VSHARE is a similar module that automatically will be installed by Windows versions 3.11 or later.
The SHARE extension is normally loaded by running the command SHARE before starting-up Windows
(type SHARE ). The command may also be placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file which runs
automatically every time your machine is started.
If you are running on Windows 3.11 or later, you normally donÆt have to do anything because
of the automatic installation of the VSHARE module.
2.0 Travel users MUST do a Central Update before upgrading 3.0 to 3.1
Before upgrading from SuperOffice 3.0 to SuperOffice 3.1, all travellers have to perform
a Central Update, Travellers MUST NOT then perform a new local update until the upgrade
from 3.0 to 3.1 is completed.
Omitting the Central Update operation for ALL Travellers before upgrading to SuperOffice
3.1 can have fatal results after the upgrade is completed.
3.0 Upgrading SuperOffice Travel users from SuperOffice 3.0 to 3.1
After upgrading the SuperOffice 3.1 software on the file server, you must also
perform new workstation installations for all travel users. This is also needed
on any other computer that runs SuperOffice from their local drive rather than
from the file server,
4.0 Using User-defined Fields with SuperOffice Travel
No users can be checked out from the central database as travelling with
SuperOffice Travel while the user-defined table is being created or edited at
the central database. It is this table in SuperOffice which contains your
important user-defined fields.
If you are using ORACLE as your central database engine, then User-defined Fields
will not be available while using SuperOffice Travel.
5.0 Upgrading from SuperOffice 3.0 using single-user WATCOM
If you are using the RunTime Single-user WATCOM engine (RTDSK40W.EXE) with
SuperOffice, you have to perform the upgrade in a special way. Please do as follows!
First run A:SETUP and select Single-User UPDATE. When the update is completed DO NOT START
SuperOffice 3.1. Instead follow the instructions below.
Insert SuperOffice disk 4 in drive A: , and go to the MS-DOS prompt and type:
EXPAND A:\SO_ARC\DATA\SUPEROF3.DB_ C:\SO_ARC\DATA\REBUILD\SO3UPD.DB
Close the MS-DOS session and return to Windows Program Manager.
Open your ODBC.INI- file by selecting Run from the File-menu and type ODBC.INI.
1. Under the existing section called [ODBC Data Sources] add the following line :-
SuperOfficeUpgrade=Watcom SQL 4.0
2. Add a new section as follows :
[SuperOfficeUpgrade]
driver=wod40w.dll
description=SuperOffice 3.1 database prototype
DatabaseFile=c:\so_arc\data\rebuild\SO3UPD.DB
EngineName=SO3UPD
Start=RTDSK40W.exe %d
Save your changes and exit the text editor.
Open the file C:\SUPEROFF\SOSETUP.INI
Make sure that the item Action is set for Rebuild, if not change it (Action =Rebuild).
Now, double click on C:\SUPEROFF\SOSETUP.EXE from File Manager and follow the instructions
displayed to you on the screen. This runs the SUperOffice Rebuild program.
When the rebuild is completed rename the file C:\SO_ARC\DATA\SUPEROF3.DB
to C:\SO_ARC\DATA\SUPEROF3.30 and copy the file C:\SO_ARC\DATA\REBUILD\SO3UPD.DB to C:\SO_ARC\DATA\SUPEROF3.DB
The upgrade is now done, You may now STARTUP SuperOffice 3.1.
6.0 User-defined Fields with WATCOM single-user Database Option
The free WATCOM run-time database engine included with SuperOffice does not
fully support the User-defined Fields feature in SuperOffice.
To make User-defined Table work, you have to:
1. Purchase and upgrade to a full WATCOM database for a single-user,
available from WATCOM International. Install the database in the SuperOffice
database directory using Watcom's own instructions for correct installation.
You are then able to work with your own User-defined Fields and to make
changes to the table definition itself at anytime (eg. adding new types
of customer information-fields).
2. Alternatively, you can temporarily move the SuperOffice database
on to a machine already running a full single-user WATCOM. Run SuperOffice
on that database and create your own User-defined Table there. You then
copy the database back to the original machine, and SuperOffice will process
the new User-defined Table, enabling you to enter customer records as you
wish. However, changes to the table definition itself can only be done on
the machine running the full single-user WATCOM database.
7.0 Using SuperOffice Travel with WATCOM Servers
To make SuperOffice Travel work for an environment where the central
database is a WATCOM server, a few special changes have to be added manually by you.
For all Workstations that will generate a Database Prototype, the following change
is needed to the ODBC.INI file. This file is found in the WIndows directory.
1. Under the existing section called [ODBC Data Sources] add the following line :-
AREA1=Watcom SQL 4.0
2. Add a new section as follows :-
[AREA1]
driver=wod40w.dll
description=SuperOffice 3.1 database prototype
DatabaseFile=g:\so_arc\template\travel\AREA1.DB
EngineName=AREA1
Start=db32w.exe %d
Note! If you do not use User-Defined Fields, you may use the
Windows Run-Time version (RTDSK40W.EXE) as your Area1 engine.
(Start=RTDSK40W.EXE %d)
3. Note that the tag under point 2 above, DatabaseFile= ,
should be adjusted for your own environment. The directory ...\template\travel
is created per the installation of your multi-user SuperOffice and this
should be entered with the disk drive and directory name details as installed.
8.0 Running SuperOffice and WATCOM with Windows in Standard-mode
SuperOffice 3.0 will not work on a WATCOM database if you
are running Windows in Standard-mode.
If you must run Windows in Standard-mode please contact
SuperOffice for a special 16-bit version of the WATCOM SQL engine.
9.0 How to perform backup of a WATCOM Server
There are two ways to make backups if you are using a multi-user WatCom engine.
1. Stop the server and copy the file to an area that is included in your normal backup routines.
2. Use WatComÆs own routine. This is described in your Watcom User Manual.
10.0 Always make a backup copy when ...
You should always make a backup of your database files before
making changes to your database. Recovering with this backup
file is the only way to restore your data from any errors that
might occur.
You should always keep backup copies until you are 100 per cent certain
that your database changes are successful.
Always make a backup copy of your database before performing any of these operations:
- Importing
- Upgrading
- Consistency Checking
- Altering or Creating User-defined Fields
- Rebuilding
